China–Bulgaria Education and Culture Cooperation Alliance Established in Nantong
On April 24, 2025, the China–Bulgaria Education and Culture Cooperation Alliance was officially established at Nantong University, marking a major milestone in educational and cultural collaboration between China and Bulgaria. The founding ceremony brought together representatives from both countries, including Bulgaria’s National Education Foundation, Varna Free University, and the Asia Bulgaria Association of Culture, Sport and Tourism, as well as delegates from prominent Chinese universities such as Nantong University, Shanghai Jianqiao University, China University of Geosciences, and Suzhou University.
Bulgaria is one of the first Central and Eastern European countries to sign joint cooperation documents with China under the Belt and Road Initiative, and cooperation between the two nations in education, culture, and science has become a model for Sino-European collaboration.
During the ceremony, Vice Rector Eleonora Tankova of Varna Free University expressed her hope that the Alliance would serve as an innovative platform for joint development in science, education, culture, and sustainable development. She emphasized that the Alliance would promote deeper cooperation, foster academic exchange, and open a new chapter in China–Bulgaria educational collaboration.
At the Alliance’s inaugural meeting, members approved the Charter, elected the Presidium and Secretariat, and inaugurated the China–Europe “Belt and Road” Art Research Institute. Nantong University, Guilin Tourism University, and Wuhan University of Arts and Science also held separate cooperation meetings with Varna Free University, discussing joint programs for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, scholar exchanges, and the development of highly skilled professionals.
The Alliance aims to expand its membership, inviting more universities, institutions, and individuals to participate in fostering mutual understanding, academic cooperation, and cultural exchange between China and Bulgaria. With its establishment, the Alliance sets a strong foundation for long-term collaboration, strengthening ties between the two nations in education, culture, and research.
